Mt. Manaslu

Trip Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a remote and off-the-beaten-path adventure that encircles Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), the eighth-highest peak in the world. This trek is ideal for those seeking a less crowded route with dramatic Himalayan landscapes, deep cultural immersion, and pristine nature. It offers everything from lush lowland valleys to towering snow-covered passes, Tibetan Buddhist culture, and hidden alpine gems that most trekkers miss.

One of the trek’s most captivating villages is Samagaun (3,530m), a beautiful Tibetan-influenced settlement nestled beneath the towering Manaslu massif. Samagaun serves as an ideal acclimatization stop and a base for rewarding day hikes. From here, trekkers can explore Pungyen Gompa (also known as Pangom Gompa), a peaceful monastery perched on a hillside with panoramic views of Mt. Manaslu and surrounding glaciers. This spiritual site offers a quiet place for reflection amidst the mountains.

Another hidden gem near Samagaun is the stunning Birendra Lake, a glacial lake fed directly from the Manaslu Glacier. Often overlooked, this turquoise lake is a short hike from the village and provides a tranquil escape with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and icefalls.

For those with extra energy and acclimatization, a hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) from Samagaun is a true highlight. The trail winds through high alpine terrain with sweeping views of the Manaslu range, offering trekkers a close-up experience of the Himalayas without the need for mountaineering.

The trek includes with Larke La Pass (5,106m), the longest pass in the himalayas of nepal. This challenging yet rewarding ascent offers spectacular views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. The descent from the pass leads into the lush forests of the Annapurna region, completing the circuit.

The Manaslu Circuit is not just about the mountains—it’s also a cultural journey. The trail passes through remote villages like Namrung, Lho, Samdo, and Deng, where trekkers experience traditional Tibetan lifestyle, ancient monasteries, and the genuine hospitality of the local people.

Perfect season to trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek, known for its rugged beauty, rich culture, and remote landscapes, is best experienced during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These two periods are considered the prime trekking seasons due to ideal weather, stable trails, and enhanced scenic beauty.

In spring, the region awakens from winter, with warm days and blooming rhododendrons, magnolias, and wildflowers blanketing the hillsides. This season offers excellent visibility of Himalayan peaks like Manaslu (8,163m), Ganesh Himal, and Himlung. Wildlife sightings are more common as animals become more active, and the fresh air combined with blossoming nature creates a magical trekking experience. The trail is alive with new energy, but less crowded than autumn, making it perfect for those seeking both beauty and a bit of solitude.

Autumn is the most popular time to trek the Manaslu Circuit. The monsoon rains clear the dust from the atmosphere, leaving behind crisp, clear skies that offer spectacular mountain vistas throughout the journey. Temperatures are comfortable, especially in the lower altitudes, and the trails are dry and easy to navigate. This season also coincides with Nepal’s biggest festivals—Dashain and Tihar—allowing trekkers to witness and participate in vibrant cultural celebrations in Gurung, Tibetan, and other ethnic communities along the route.

Summer (June to August), dominated by the monsoon, is generally less favorable due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and the increased risk of landslides, especially in the lower sections. However, the landscape becomes incredibly lush and green, and for botanists or those who enjoy peaceful trails without crowds, it can still be a rewarding time with proper planning and caution.

Winter (December to February) brings frigid temperatures, especially above 3,000 meters, and heavy snowfall can make high passes like Larke La (5,106m) impassable. Still, it has its own charm: clear skies, fewer trekkers, and dramatic snowscapes. For well-prepared and experienced trekkers, winter offers a serene, remote adventure with minimal human traffic.
